Karnataka ist eigentlich ein Bundesland im südlichen Indien. Dort hatte Frontman Ian Jones einige Zeit verbracht und war zu dem Bandnamen inspiriert worden.

Die Band wurde 1997 in Wales gegründet. Von den Gründungsmitgliedern ist allerdings nur noch Ian Jones dabei. Der Musik merkt man das nicht an. Die neue Sängerin Lisa Fury klingt fast wie Rachel Cohen, die die Band 2004 verließ. Überhaupt - und das muss sich die Gruppe als Kritik gefallen lassen - ist keine rechte Entwicklung in den Alben zu erkennen. Sie sind alle ziemlich bombastisch, sinfonisch und melodisch. Ich höre sie sehr gerne, aber ich finde, sie sind ein bisschen wie Buttercreme-Torte. Irgendwann ist man voll. Mehr als ein Album auf einmal geht nicht rein in die Ohren. Dann brauche ich was dezenteres.

Letzter Beitrag der vorhergehenden Seite:

Gestern hab* ich gleich zwei Päckchen bekommen: eins mit vier live-King Crimson-CDs ('69 & '72) & der neuesten von Anekdoten. King Crimson kennt man, bleibt nur die Frage des soundes!
Aber das andere Päckchen kam von privat, Danke dem edlen Spender, & enthielt sechs CDs von Karnataka!

Fast 15 Jahre ist es nun her, das ich das erste Mal von Karnataka hörte, sogar sah, auf DVD:
Einer meiner Kumpel hatte zu der Zeit schon einen DVD-Player & wir sahen z.B. Spock's Beard - '99 Don't try this at Home (live @ 013, Tillburg; Holland) & wir sahen einen Progressiv Rock Sampler, der zwei Bonusse enthielt: zum einen Mostly Autumn - Mother Nature, ein 13 Minüter, das haut nixe um, war sofort auf der WunschListe & eben Karnataka - Heaven can wait http://yesforum.phpbb8.de/post61631.html#p61631!
Nun, beim nächsten Besuch in Mein Laden, war klar wonach ich suchte. Komisch war nur, das bei beiden Bands leichter an DVDs als an CDs ranzukommen war! Es wurde also nix draus, noch nicht, denn einige Jahre gingen in*s Land & wie es der Zufall wollte, konnte ich mir einen leisten & natürlich auch die DVDs, die zu dieser Zeit noch von minderer Qualität waren, aber dafür heftig im Preis! http://www.musicaldiscoveries.com/reviews/kic.htm
Das war die perfecte EinstiegsDroge in ein neues ProgUniversum, mit halt schön-geistger Attitüde!

Auf einem anderen DVD-Sampler waren sie auch wieder mit dabei, mit zwei Frauen, ob es sich hierbei um Anne-Marie Helder handelte?
Rachel Cohen wird hier http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karnataka_%28band%29 Rachel Jones genannt, aber nicht, das sie mit Ian Jones liiert war? Auch wird nicht erwähnt, warum sie nach der ReFormation 2005 nicht mehr dabei war, schwanger? Eigentlich dachte ich mehr an Bulimie, sie war doch sehr dünn!

Angefangen hatte ich ja mit der ersten, sprich der zweiten Veröffentlichung The Storm & der letzten Secrets of Angels .
Meine Meinung dazu, mmh, große Unterschiede im sound oder Gesang zwischen Rachel & Hayley gibt es nicht. Auch Lisa fällt nicht weiter auf. Leider eben auch keine keyboard-solos, schade finde ich das auch & woran es liegt, weiß ich auch nicht!
Hier heißt der Thread nunmal Karnataka & da kann man schonmal Ausbrüche, Breaks & dergleichen vermissen!
Aber dafür haben wir doch andere Bands! Klar bin ich auch auf der Suche nache dem perfecten sound, aber wenn alle perfect sind, wo bleiben da unsere hochgelobten Unterschiede???

Was mir auffiehl & es fiehl mir nur auf, weil ich Heaven can wait schon länger kenne, das an der set-list einiges nicht stimmt, nicht nur 5. Dreamer & 6. Heaven Can Wait ! sondern:

Das glaube ich Dir auch, aber da gibt es Typen, die das Album eben falsch in*s net eingeben & audiograbber, sowie CD-Archiv kontrollieren es nicht & wenn dann jemand sich drauf verlassen muß, ist er angeschmiert! Stimmt denn die nicht.mp3 Liste??? Im Moment weiß ich nicht mehr weiter!

Es gibt noch ein makabere Gleichmäßigkeit bei Mostly Autumn & Karnataka: die Debut-Alben sind nur noch für sauteuer zu beziehen! Schade eigentlich.

Debut album

The five-piece recorded what would become their debut album, Karnataka in 1997. In the beginning, the band had no thought of actually releasing the album — they made the recording for their own pleasure. As they started to play live shows in their new configuration, however, word of mouth ensured that an increasing number of people started asking for copies.

It was recommended to the band that they send a copy of the album to Martin Hudson at the Classic Rock Society. Martin gave the band their first break by positively reviewing the album in the society's magazine, and then offering them a gig for the Classic Rock Society in Rotherham, supporting the Genesis tribute band ReGenesis in 1999. The show was a success and Karnataka were offered another support with Jump in October 1999. Encouraged, the band had already started writing the material that would eventually appear on their second album, The Storm.

The Storm

The Storm was recorded between August–November 1999 in Ian's studio. The album was then mixed at Rockfield Studios in Mounmouthshire, Wales—a studio used by such notable bands as Rush, Hawkwind, Queen and Clannad. Further live performances brought the band to the attention of record company Voiceprint through whom they are now distributed. The band toured the UK extensively with the new album, culminating in a show before an audience of die-hards at London's Mean Fiddler, which was filmed and subsequently released on DVD under licence to Classic Rock Productions. The DVD, entitled simply In Concert, was well received by fans but frustrated the band, who still felt that the results did not fully reflect their acclaimed live performances.

Delicate Flame of Desire (2003)

Delicate Flame of Desire is the third studio album by progressive rock band Karnataka, released by Immrama Records on February 10, 2003. It was the final Karnataka album to feature all five of the original band members, as bassist Ian Jones was the only remaining founding member left by the time The Gathering Light, the band's fourth album, was released.

Delicate Flame of Desire

The In Concert DVD did, however, feature some new material the band was working on for their third album, although the songs were destined to change a little before they were recorded in the sessions for what was to become the band's breakthrough album. Delicate Flame Of Desire, the band’s third album, was recorded with producer Steve Evans and mixed by Joe Gibb. The album brought the band’s music to a much wider audience with Radio 2 airplay and widespread media coverage. This album was the only Karnataka studio album to feature new member, Anne-Marie Helder, on flute and backing vocals. She had previously appeared on the band's In Concert DVD as one of three guest backing vocalists.

An in-depth interview with Ian Jones, Jonathan Edwards and Rachel Jones was conducted by Jon Hinchliffe in 2002, shortly before the release of. 'Delicate Flame of Desire'. In the interview, all three talk extensively about the origins of the band, the writing process and the dynamics of how the band operates.

June 2004 will see the release of the latest album from successful Welsh rock band Karnataka. The album is a double live album. This live album will see the band consolidating the success they have achieved over the last six years since the release of the self-titled debut album in 1998.

Karnataka formed in the late nineties and very quickly built up a strong and staunch following. The band has released a number of well-received albums including Karnataka, The Storm and more recently Delicate Flame Of Desire. The band has a unique line-up, which features two female vocalists: Rachel Jones and Anne-Marie Helder, both of whom have complimenting but contrasting styles. The remainder of the band are made up of bassist Ian Jones, drummer Gavin John Griffiths, guitarist Paul Davies and keyboard player Jonathan Edwards. In addition to the staunch live following the band have built up both in the UK and abroad they have also managed to find friends in high places in the shape of Bob Harris, who regularly plays their music on his national radio programme and has been quoted as saying that Karnataka are "Wonderful Stuff..."

It is through extensive gigging and attention to the original grass-roots following that has paid dividends for Karnataka and whilst the studio albums are a very important and of course necessary part of the Karnataka story it is the live arena where the band really connects with an audience.

This double live album was recorded in late 2003 at two specific concerts at the Limelight in Crewe and the Borderline in London. The album contains over two hours of music spread across the two discs and includes material from the band's previous studio albums and also includes two new and previously unreleased songs. The live album comes at the end of a hectic year for the band, which saw them touring heavily in their own right and with others such as Status Quo, and also saw the band reap their just rewards at the annual Classic Rock Society awards where they picked up awards for the best album of the year (Delicate Flame Of Desire), Best Band and best female Vocalist (Rachel Jones).

2004 saw no let up in the bands schedule and found them following up the release of Strange Behaviour with an extensive tour of the UK, which also included an appearance at the legendary Isle of Wight Festival alongside the likes of David Bowie and The Who.All content © Gonzo Media Group 2014.

Nach dem Livealbum „Strange Behaviour“ (2004) gab es eine längere Pause. Infolge einiger Veränderungen in der Besetzung von Karnataka: Sängerin Rachel Cohen (vormals Jones) schloss sich „The Reasoning“ an, Keyboarder, Gitarrist und Drummer waren fortan Teil von „Panic Room“. Erst 2007 war die Band wieder mit den oben erwähnten Personen um Gründer Ian Jones komplett und die Veröffentlichung von „The Gathering Light“ im Frühjahr 2010 rief im Königreich – besonders bei der „Classic Rock Society“ – wahre Jubelstürme hervor.

Warum eigentlich? Zuvorderst wohl, weil klappern zum Handwerk gehört. Man kann Karnataka nämlich keinesfalls vorwerfen, dass man sich nicht gut zu vermarkten wüsste. Und da ich die Vorläufer des hier zu besprechenden Albums nicht kenne, kann ich auch nicht beurteilen, ob man nun vielleicht einen Quantensprung in der Entwicklung gemacht hat, oder ähnlich Spektakuläres im Raume steht.

Aber gut, zur Musik! An dem Album ist Troy Donockley mit seinen Pipes beteiligt, was sich auch gleich zu Beginn (und übrigens auch am Ende) der CD hören lässt. Am Anfang und beim deutlich zu lang(atmig) geratenen Titelsong sind keltische Folkeinflüsse überdeutlich. Besser bzw. neutraler sind hingegen einige der Songs im Mittelteil des Albums geraten und zwar immer dann, wenn der ausgezeichnete Enrico Pinna mal wieder einem Track mit tollem, gefühlvollem Solo seinen Stempel aufdrückt. Diese Instrumentalteile machen richtig Spaß!

Die zweite heraus zu hebende Leistung auf der Scheibe kommt von Sängerin Lisa Fury, die mit angenehmem Timbre und Gefühl für den Gesamtausdruck der Songs, dabei ohne jemals zerbrechlich zu wirken, eine ziemlich tadellose Performance abliefert. Sie ist wesentlich besser anzuhören als z.B. Aleena Gibson bei Kaipa. „The Gathering Light“ wird anderswo als gute, melodiöse Rockmusik eingestuft, und damit sind wir bei einem aus meiner Sicht etwas negativen Punkt angelangt: Karnataka bieten nur durch die Gitarrensoli guten melodischen NeoProg, es gibt ansonsten viele folkig-rockige Anleihen bei IONA, Mostly Autumn und Magenta, teilweise auch bei Clannad. Und beim Instrumentaltrack „State of Grace“ fiel mir spontan Wierschems Mindmovie ein.

Das Album unterhält mich in einigen Teilen allerdings durchaus sehr ordentlich, es ist weder sperrig noch schwierig, aber es hat eben auch keine progressiven Kanten und hält nur wenige Überraschungen bereit, so z.B. das orientalische Thema bei „Tide to Fall“.

Auch sonst kann man nicht groß meckern, denn die Produktion unter dem hauseigenen Label ist druckvoll und dynamisch ausgefallen und für das Artwork (von Michael Bosanko, dessen Website bei Karnataka verlinkt ist) gibt es ebenfalls ein Lob.

Trotz alledem ist mir das Album insgesamt ein wenig zu flach und fast "beliebig", bietet mir zu wenig interessante und abwechslungsreiche Kompositionen, die ich gerne häufig im Ohr hätte und an denen ich mich festbeißen könnte.

The Gathering Light

Karnataka was then resurrected as a band when Ian Jones' started writing with keyboardist Gonzalo Carrera. The pair were initially joined by guitarist Nick May (formerly of The Enid) and vocalist Alquimia, however the lineup continued to evolve before settling on the lineup of Ian Jones (bass, guitars,keyboards), Louie Palmer (drummer - session player), Lisa Fury (vocals), Gonzalo Carrera (keyboards) and guitarist Enrico Pinna. This new line-up of the band toured in Spring 2007 playing a selection of fan favourites and four or five new songs to provide a flavour of the work in progress.

Auditions were held for a new drummer, the position finally being taken by veteran Ian Harris, who had previously played with a multitude of acts, including Chris Rea, Mica Paris and Nitin Sawney.

Work on the band's fourth studio album The Gathering Light began midway through 2008 although the band continued to tour. This time the old favourites took a back seat to a slew of new material, showcasing the band's confidence in their post-split writing. The tour was very well received, resulting in strong voting for the band and the individual musicians in 2008's Classic Rock Society awards, even though the band had yet to release any recordings with the new line-up.

The fourth Karnataka studio album, The Gathering Light, was finally released in February 2010, although fans who had pre-ordered a special edition of the album received their copies slightly earlier. The band embarked on a string of live dates to promote the album, which had already received some exceptionally positive reviews.

"The Gathering Light stands true to Karnataka's heritage, yet illustrates significant artistic growth since the former lineup's Delicate Flame of Desire release six years ago. progressive rock influences are more apparent [...] While their fans have waited a long time for this release, the care taken in the writing, recording and production of The Gathering Light has delivered an outstanding progressive rock album..."[2]

In May 2010, Ian Harris, Gonzalo Carrera and Lisa Fury announced on their websites that due to personal reasons they would be leaving the band. It was announced in October 2010 that Ian Harris would be replaced by former Karnataka session drummer Louie Palmer, and in October 2010 multi-instrumentalist Colin Mold was revealed as having joined the band in a new role. In February 2011, it was announced that Hayley Griffiths was the new lead vocalist for the band replacing Lisa Fury. Hayley was previously the lead vocalist with global phenomena Riverdance and Michael Flatley's Lord Of The Dance. The band's new lineup was completed in March 2011, when Cagri Tozluoglu was announced as the band's new keyboard player. In Sept 2011 the new line-up announced an extensive 15 date tour of the UK would take place early in 2012, subsequently named the "New Light Tour". Due to the second departure of Palmer, the band were joined by session player Matt McDonough for the tour (and continued to tour with the band until 2014). Following the completion of the 2012 tour, Mold departed the band, and was not replaced.

The band filmed and recorded their show at The Met Theatre in Bury on the New Light Tour. The show was enhanced bylights and lasers, and filmed in high definition. The live DVD and was released in late 2012. The band continued to tour this show into 2013.

Super Scheibe, die Gathering Light! Mir hat Lisa Fury als Sängerin noch besser gefallen als Haley Griffiths. Die "Handschrift" von Ian Jones zieht sich ja durch alle Alben, und ich finde, er entwickelt sich weiter.
